Adventures in Metalworking

First attempt at iron working is a success!
First attempt at iron working is a success!

I have been interested for a while now in adding metal bases and accents to some of my woodworking projects but if I could even find what I wanted online, it was prohibitively expensive and shipping more than doubled the price in some cases. Fortunately I attended a Meet-up group for furniture up-cycling and so did Will Thien, owner of Suncoast Iron. Will hosts DIY sessions at his workshop and spends a great deal of time teaching people how to work with steel.

In just a couple of hours I was cutting steel to size, drilling holes, bending and curling and even welding. By the end of the session I had a set of plant hangers to take home and a tiny bit of metalworking know how. I’ll be back at the sessions to learn more and start constructing bases for custom pieces soon!
